Encore is a tabletop zen garden that has been specifically designed for dementia patients in residential care facilities. It is created to inspire self-directed play through the use of sensory affordances enabled by responsive technology. A Positive Design framework was utilized to inform the project goals and the result is a product that scaffolds self-driven meaningful play based on design guidelines supporting leisure activity and ludic play. The design of Encore is inspired by tabletop zen gardening products and Montessori style didactic materials.
